Health & Hygiene

Village Latrine Project

Starting in mid-2003 is a pilot project to equip each household in 16 villages in Tambon Ban Luang, Chomthong District, Chiangmai – deep inside Doi Inthanon National Park – with a combination latrine and bathroom outhouse. This will be a low budget operation, with the Foundation providing training and basic sanitary ware, and the villagers and the community provide labour and locally available building materials. With experience from this pilot project the Foundation intends considerably to expand the provision of these essential facilities to all other villages receiving developmental assistance, both currently and in future years.

Medical & Dental Training

Young Karen people with sufficient educational ability are being selected to go forward for training at Nursing College, and we are looking for candidates to pursue university degrees in medicine and dentistry. The Foundation will support these young people with educational grants, and assist them in job placement on graduation.

In future years, when the medical and dental students have successfully graduated, we hope to establish them in clinics owned by the Foundation, but in the ownership of which these valuable staff members will also have an incentive shareholding.
